Have you ever noticed how quickly your entire day can spiral?
You wake up already thinking about everything you need to do. Before you’ve even finished your first cup of coffee, your mind is racing. Emails. Deadlines. Messages. Responsibilities. Decisions.
By lunchtime, you feel scattered.
By the end of the day, you’re wondering where your energy went.
Most people assume they need to change their circumstances to feel better.
A different job.
More money.
A vacation.
A quieter life.
Sometimes those things are absolutely needed.
But sometimes what you actually need is much simpler.
You need to change your state.
One of the most empowering things I’ve learned is that your state isn’t fixed.
It isn’t something that just happens to you.
It’s something you can intentionally influence.
And often, it starts with something as ordinary as your breath.
When we’re stressed, our breathing naturally becomes shallow and fast. Our body interprets that as information.
*”Something must be wrong.”*
Your nervous system responds by becoming even more alert.
More vigilant.
More reactive.
Before long, you’re not just thinking stressful thoughts...
You’re physically experiencing stress.
But the beautiful thing is that the communication works both ways.
Just as stress changes your breathing...
Your breathing can change your stress.
A few slow, intentional breaths send your nervous system a completely different message.
*”We’re okay.”*
*”We’re safe.”*
*”You can let go now.”*
It’s such a small shift that most people underestimate it.
But your body doesn’t.
Your body is listening to every breath you take.
I also love pairing intentional breathing with visualization.
Not because you’re pretending your problems don’t exist.
But because you’re giving your brain a new reference point.
Close your eyes for a moment.
Imagine yourself already living the outcome you’re working toward.
Not just seeing it.
Feeling it.
Maybe it’s opening your bank account and seeing a number that makes your shoulders relax.
Maybe it’s walking through your day feeling healthy, energized, and at ease in your body.
Maybe it’s finishing work with enough time and energy left to actually enjoy your life.
Stay there for a moment.
Notice how your body responds.
Your brain is remarkably responsive to the pictures you repeatedly give it.
When you combine that with slow, intentional breathing, something begins to shift.
You move out of reactivity and into possibility.
You stop operating from urgency.
You begin making decisions from a calmer, more grounded place.
And those decisions compound.
That’s what so many people miss.
Transformation isn’t always about making one enormous leap.
Sometimes it’s about interrupting the state you’ve been living in long enough to choose a different one.
You don’t have to wait until life calms down before you feel calm.
Sometimes calm is the very thing that allows you to create a different life.
So the next time you notice yourself spiraling, don’t ask yourself how you’re going to fix everything.
Just pause.
Take a slow breath.
Then another.
Your circumstances may not have changed yet.
But you have.
And that’s often where everything begins.
